 Film Review - Tron

I remember 1982. I was graduating from the university, Atari was at its peak, and Disney was the target of a hostile takeover. Somehow in all of that, Disney decided to be daring and make a movie based on computer games. Computer games were big back then, but they weren't mainstream for the moviegoing audience.

Tron didn't do great at the box office, but then, back then nothing Disney did except theme parks did well. My, how times have changed. Tron did push into new territory. An enormous amount (for the time) of Tron was computer generated. The costumes won an Academy award for their appearance of glowing at times.

Yes, the story is weak and simple, and if you aren't into the video game culture or computer geekdom, you won't understand everything. Tron is a milestone picture at a turning point in the history of the Walt Disney Co.
