Film Review - Thomas Crown Affair, The
What is interesting about The Thomas Crown Affair is that it's hard to place it in a genre. It is not a whodunit. We know who did it. It's sort of a "can they catch him?" movie.
The plot revolves around the theft of a painting from a museum in broad day light by a billionaire. Hey! Everyone's got to have a hobby!
Enter the insurance investigator who decides that it would be wise to have an affair with her main suspect. The rest is just filler.
Pierce Brosnan is the thief, Rene Russo the investigator. They are well matched on the screen. In fact this may be their best roles yet. The sins of the film belong to director John McTiernan.
His pacing is horrible especially in the middle of the picture. He very obviously withholds information to keep you guessing but is so open about the ploy he is using, it's almost distracting.
The end makes no sense. I won't tell it to you, but the end defies logic and human nature. One leaves the theatre thinking, "How stupid do you think I am?"
Finally, we must mention Rene Russo's tits. We must because they are exposed for what seems a lot of the time by modern film standards. As much as I admire the fact that Russo is in her forties and she still has a great rack, it's very obvious that this is a ploy by McTiernan to distract the audience from the fact that the plot has come to a screeching halt.
All in all the film is fun. Rene's tits are fun. But the direction sucks.
