 Film Review - Spy Hard

When you tell people about a movie like Spy Hard, you have to place the film in proper context. It's a screwball comedy and has about as much to do with reality as Oliver Stone's autobiography.

Critics love to compare film against film; ok, I play that game, too. Let's compare this to the Zucker Brother's Airplane movies. That's fair, because we thought this was a Zucker picture when we were watching it. It has those same movie reference jokes and gags, such as, "The cockpit! What is it?" "It's this little room at the front of the plane, but that's not important now." Yes, Spy Hard rips off Airplane's most famous gag. It's the parody of parodies.

Leslie Nielsen's second film career as a bumbling idiot hero is alive and strong. This time he's Agent WD-40, working for someone like the CIA. Although there's a slight Mission: Impossible hint, this is really a James Bond parody.

Charles Durning is very funny as The Director, WD-40's boss and a master of disguise. Just about everyone else is cannon fodder for the laugh machine. They come in, humor explodes and they leave.

Don't look for a real story here, you won't find it. But you should have known that before you bought your ticket. What you should look for are jokes in the end credits. Once again, the Zucker Brothers-style of humor is imitated. If you liked Airplane you will like Spy Hard.

Jammed Pipe!
