Film Review - Space Cowboys

Okay, Tex. Ya see way back int he 1950's there were these four Air Force Good Ole Boys who used to fly planes until the air ran out and then they'd jump out and watch the plane splatter in the ground from their parachutes. Next thing ya know Uncle Sam decided to send a chimp into space, and we didn't need these boys any more. Or so we thought.

Now right about the year 2000, them Ruskies have a problem with their satellite. Seems everyone wanted to watch HBO and the bird began falling down. Now this bird had a stolen American guidance system designed for Skylab thought up by, you guessed it, one of them Good Ole Boys. There lays our story.

Space Cowboys is about friendship and the differences in the generations. Our four old timers are a fun collection of men, whom you could believe have known each other for fifty years. This is a great ensemble cast. These guys tend to act as individuals. They are very competitive, and don't get along with authority figures. On the flip side we have the younger generation of "Team Members" who know nothing of competition, and nothing of heroics. This film really makes you wonder about the current generation. Could they make the ultimate sacrifice in called upon. The four old guys can.

There's a lot of laughs in this drama. It comes from the chemistry between the old timers. Their good natured humor makes us want to go along for the ride into space, it helps us identify with them and cheer them on.

On the flip side, I got to say that the main sticking point in the the film was well telegraphed several reels ahead of time. I saw this coming. Also, they ridiculous idea that NASA could actually get a mission launched from scratch in thirty days is baloney. But was they said in Hardware Wars, "Relax kid! It's just a movie!"

Slight Suction!
