Film Review - Snake Eyes
Snake Eyes was a complete surprise. I had been told so many bad things about this film, I wasn't really anticipating seeing it. As fate would have it, Snake Eyes was the film on a recent cross-country flight. I'll watch anything to survive a flight.
This film really is great! The entire film happens in and around a boxing arena in Atlantic City. At the heart of the plot is a somewhat corrupt police officer, who has witnessed at least part of an assassination. The big question is what exactly did he witness? What is set up in the first 15 minutes is the chain dragging you up to the top of the roller coaster to come.
What makes this film is the never-slowing pace, yet the story is always crystal clear. Everything works here: writing, acting, direction and, most importantly, editing. In fact, the editing of this picture deserves an Academy Award nomination.
If there's anything to knock on this picture, it would be the end of the conflict. It is a very lame twist that shows the writing was just out of gas. However, the end that happens after the conflict is completed is very refreshing. I won't elaborate on this finish, because I want you to go see this picture and enjoy the whole thing. I'm not easily impressed. I liked this film.
