 Film Review - Scorpion King

When you think of The Scorpion King, the Mummy movies come to mind as he was introduced in the second, (although he really wasn't prominent.) Somehow, Conan The Barbarian comes to mind as well. Both are stories that happen long ago before massive technology was developed.

Like Conan, we've been told that the Scorpion King had been a good man who battled evil. Sort of a male version of Xena. But like Darth Vader, something happens to cause the Scorpion King to become an agent of evil.

This is all that we know before the curtain goes up. We were told this in The Mummy Returns. What this film appears to be is a prequel to the fall into darkness. Mathayus is an assassin as the curtain goes up. He and his brother are hired to kill the Sorceress of an evil warlord.

The fight becomes personal when the brother is killed. Mathayus learns that the Sorceress Cassandra is the film's cheesecake Kelly Hu. This is the only woman I've seen do full frontal nudity, and the audience still sees nothing. Very teasey. Eventually Mathayus falls in love with the cheesecake and decides to kill off the warlord.

The rest of the film is blood, gore, and cheesecake. Nothing spectacular, but a fun bubble gum film. I'm guessing the deal with the devil Mathayus makes which later turns him to the Dark Side comes a few sequels from now.

I wouldn't pay full price for this film, but if you can see it at a bargain matinee, go for it.

Jammed Pipe!
