Film Review - Princess Bride, The

Peter Falk: "When I was your age, television was called books; And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick and I used to read it to your father ... and today, I'm gonna read it to you."
Brat: "Does it got any sports in it?"
Peter Falk: "Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles."

This is a beautiful fairy tale parody with bad guys who are good, and good guys who are bad. The tale revolves around the quest for true love, but nothing as dry and stale as The Liz Taylor Story.

Rob Reiner is in the driver's seat on this film and his craftsmanship is on full display. The Princess Bride works on many levels. Every character has great lines. The acting is cartoonish in an appropriate way. Don't bother renting, just buy this movie. Each time you watch it, it's just as enjoyable as the first time.

Being a Rob Reiner film, the dialogue is very tight. Words, although there are more than in the average film, are not wasted. A few of our faves...

"Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to die!"

"Please consider me as an alternative to suicide."

"Am I going mad, or did the word 'think' escape your lips?! You were not hired for your brains you hippopotamic land mass!"

"Ha ha, you fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia; and only slightly less well known is this: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!"
