Film Review - Phenomenon

It's kind of hard to write a movie that doesn't have a central antagonist for the hero to work off of. In fact, the classic good versus evil story is the easiest of stories to tell. It's very cut and dry.

Phenomenon is not such a easy story. Although this film does stumble into a "the government is bad" sub-plot, Phenomenon is about a simple man to whom the unusual happens. It's easy to get lost in the wonder of a man who can move things with his mind, but the truth is, this man was a phenomenon before these powers came to him. He's a simple charitable gentleman. After he gains these powers, he a simple charitable gentleman. He's more interested in finding ways to help people than looking for wealth and power for himself.

John Travolta plays the lead role. Travolta has been making quite a career lately, but in my opinion, his films have been uneven. Phenomenon is a film he can be very proud of. His character is very complex, and Travolta's performance never wavers from the mark.

Kyra Sedgwick plays Travolta's love interest. Her character could use a little kindness in her life, and she has a hard time accepting it. It takes a lot of gentle work to win her heart. They create the ideal loving relationship.

The rest of this movie is simply a framework for this story of a gentleman who one evening becomes more than he was without losing himself in the confusion.
