One Night at McCool's is a tale of murder, romance, betrayal, fantasy, and manipulation. Other than that, it's a complete bore.

The story revolves around Randy (Matt Dillon), a hard working bartender who comes to the rescue of a damsel in distress (Liv Tyler). Jewel Valentine is the object of every man's desire. Each man sees her differently. As each man looks at Jewel, we see the lighting subtly change to feed his fantasy. It's a neat little touch that gets some great laughs.

Randy looses he job, Jewel moves in, they start stealing to survive, and then start killing people. It's very surreal, and in a dark way funny. Eventually, Detective Dehling (John Goodman) begins snooping around the house looking for suspects, and then decides he must also have Jewel. Goodman is a movie star who doesn't act like one. He's fully emersed in the character. He's playing this all straight, we're laughing our butts off.

Michael Douglas is also hitting on all cylinders as the hitman Mr. Burmeister. He reminds you a little of characters played by Robert DeNiro in films like Good Fellas. This is a change of pace for Douglas, and a great part for him.

The end of this film is an absolute riot. You probably won't see it coming. One Night at McCool's is a twisted little film. If you like dark comedy, this is for you.
