Film Review - Nixon

Time for more presidential fiction. Oliver Stone's Nixon is an unkind portrait of an unkind president. It is perhaps Stone's best-crafted film, moving throughout the eras of Nixon's life in a very fluid way. What is also very impressive is Stone's mixture of black-and-white film and color film.

Craftsmanship aside, this is a really long movie. Perhaps 40 to 60 minutes could have been trimmed out. This is Stone in all his verbosity.

Anthony Hopkins is stunning as Nixon. He's very disturbing, making you wonder if the president really was that far off his rocker. However, I think Joan Allen as Pat Nixon is truly amazing. Pat Nixon, whom nobody really knew, who stood beside Nixon even when she was dead set against him -- sometimes she was the only one who would challenge him.

If you like Oliver Stone, you'll love this film. If you like history, I would take this with a grain of salt. If you hate Nixon, you'll still hate him.
