The mistake most movie sequels make is that they are usually just a re-telling of the original. Sequels rarely capture the magic of the original. The Mummy Returns is one of these rare exceptions.

It is ten years after Rick and Evie met in Egypt. They are now married, wealthy, and have a son. Without knowing it, they also have just found a source of great power. A bracelet wrong by the Scorpion King thousands of years ago, which made him invincible.

Old enemies are afoot. Followers of Im-Ho-Tep are once again wishing to resurrect him. They too need the bracelet, and get the ball rolling on this action-adventure.

The Mummy Returns reminds you of the Indiana Jones series of movies. They are set in the same era, involve archeology, and adventure. In this go around it is Evie, not Rick, who is gung ho for adventure. Rick is the rescuer. Also tagging along are Evie's brother Jonathan, again looking for easy wealth, and Alex, Rick and Evie's son. Alex provides the door which allows every child in the theatre the chance to be in the adventure.

As most movies go, and especially sequels, The Mummy Returns is a superior effort. We the familiar theme of the original, new dimensions to the characters, and bubble gum adventure.

What falls apart is the special effects in the finale. Up until this moment, the effects are top notch. But when the Scorpion King is awakened, you wonder if someone's budget ran out of money. It's a flaw, but not big enough to warn you away.
