Film Review - Mouse on the Moon, The

Here's a film that proves that sequels never quite live up to the original. The Mouse on the Moon takes us back to the Duchy of Grand Fenwick in the early 1960's. As in The Mouse That Roared, the tiny country is in need of money and decides that the United States would be a great place to get it.

The Duchy asks the United States for one million dollars for "space research". Even in the 60's a million bucks wouldn't get you off the planet, but it's such a small amount of money, the U.S. won't think twice about it. The Duchy is really going to use the money to install in-door plumbing.

The Russians hear about this, and an aid-race begins. Russia sends a complete rocket. This being a comedy, two people who shouldn't, launch the rocket and head for the moon, beating both the US and Russia.

This really doesn't have the bite of The Mouse That Roared which really had quite a lot to say about the cold war. It also pales compared to the first movie because Peter Sellers does not appear. Sellers played three parts in the first Mouse movie, and was the driving force behind the commentary.

The Mouse on the Moon is not a bad rental, but it just doesn't hold up compared to its predecessor.
