It's the third coming of Neo, and probably the last. The Matrix Revolutions is the big finish to the Wachowski Brothers' tome of the coming of a messiah to free man from the machine over-lords.
I have to say I enjoyed this film much more than the second Matrix Reloaded. This is a much better paced film. There are fewer pauses to sell video games.
I also particularly liked the war scenes where you see minor characters introduced in the previous film doing their part. The war is not won by a single person who is the hero of all. There are many heroes, some have large roles, some small.
The philosophy is back. Just who is the real enemy and why is interesting. The nature of the two worlds and the un-stated fact that there is an interface to the Matrix that the machine world must use to get in or out is interesting. This interface is controlled and one gets the impression that programs aren't evil, but programs that control are.
There are a ton of loose ends that I'm not happy with. Remember the two ghosts in the second film? They are no where to be found. So what were they? Where have they gone? This is poor story telling. The Frenchman and his girlfriend are relegated to very minor roles. They were so well set up the last film, there should have been a better payoff.
As all good sagas do, this film comes down to one scene. One last showdown between the hero and the villain. Then the philosophy kicks in. The hero and the villain aren't that different. Just two sides of the same coin.
We have to applaud the Wachowski Brothers for their vision and the ability to actually get a few real ideas into their films. Between the special effects and the philosophy, one hopes the bar has been raised for anyone else who wants to go deep into science fiction.
