One evening a friend asked why we didn't go in for horror movies. We generally agreed they are way too stupid. They usually involved really stupid people (some of whom have very large breasts) who do really stupid things around really cheesy-looking monsters who can't be killed.

The Lost Boys is a throwback to older horror movies: the stuff from the 1930s where monsters have to obey certain rules, and people can be smart and kill the monsters. In fact, The Lost Boys even obeys the major theme of the 1930s horror film: the monster is a monster only because it is displaying antisocial behavior. Think back to Dracula and Frankenstein. These were pitiful creatures who had to be killed because they couldn't fit into society.

The Lost Boys is all of this, with tongue firmly in cheek. There's great comic relief in a lot of the dialogue, otherwise this would be just another vampire flick.

This is probably the film Kiefer Sutherland will be remembered for. Sutherland is really only a supporting character, but he's a great blood sucker. The real action happens between two brothers. One becomes a half vampire, the other is just a little twerp. The twerp studies up on combating vampires, and makes the struggle very personal.

Is there gore? Yup! Innocent people getting killed? Yup! Is it funny? Yup! See? If you make a good horror flick, we'll like it.
