Film Review - Legend of Drunken Master, The
One of the great properties of a movie, is it's ability to allow the audience just have fun. No big message. Just have fun. That's what a lot of Jackie Chan movies give us for our money - fun.
The Legend of Drunken Master takes place in China during a time when the British had create influence. Chan and his friends become involved in trying to prevent the British from stealing China's cultural treasures. This isn't because Chan is a big hero, but more because of a comedy of errors. When Chan discovers what is happening, he ready to help, because he's basically a good person. This is what makes him a hero, he's a nice guy with a good sense of morality.
He is also a master of drunken boxing. His father is horrified by this because it can lead to alcoholism. Drunken boxing is fun to watch. Chan makes these fluid movements look easy. The fight scenes are both amazing, and a source of comedy. It takes a lot of talent to make this look so good.
The flip-side of this movie are the relationships Chan has with his father and step-mother. His father is strict and unhappy with Chan's choices. His step-mother is a very funny liar, always manipulating people (mostly men) around her.
This is a hero movie so in the end, we know that Chan will win. There's no surprise. But the roller coaster ride of fight scenes to get to the end is what makes this movie worth seeing.
