Film Review - Left Behind: The Movie
I was intrigued with the idea of Left Behind since I saw one of the authors interviewed on ABC's Up Close a few weeks ago. Here was a film based very closely on the predictions in the Book of Revelations.
The premise is pretty attractive. One day a huge number of people simply disappear from the face of the earth. No one knows why at first. An airline pilot, a reporter, a pastor, and others look for answers. They discover that the rapture has happened. God has called to heaven the true believers. Now the rest of the Book of Revelations will occur over the next seven years. As I said, it seemed a very attractive story. There's just a few problems.
The acting in this film is horrible. I didn't buy anyone's performance for a moment. The man who plays the U.N. Secretary General looks and performs like a really good puppet. The film feels stiff
The writers haven't thought out motivation. Here we are at the brink of starvation, and people decide to choose peace? No, when people are hungry they choose war. It feeds them quicker. Then there's the idea that nations who for thousands of years have been arming themselves to the teeth would over night decide to disarm? Please! What planet are you writing about?
Some people might think the film is a little preachy. Yes, there are times when everything halts so to do a little selling of the faith. But what did you expect? This is a film whose purpose is to advance Christianity. It would be a little strange if the Bible didn't come up during the end of the world.
At the end of the film, my feelings were, "Hmmm, I bet Cecil B. DeMille could have done this a lot better." Good idea though.
