Film Review - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

When last I left young Harry at the theater I complained that to understand Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone I was being forced to go read the book. In the year that has passed I have read all four.

I am now a confirmed Potter fan. I wait with baited breath for the fifth book. That is why I'm sorry to say that the film version of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is a botched effort.

The book was filled with a fleshing out of the main characters. And although there was more action in the second book, this character development was the most important element.

That's not in this film. Chamber of Secrets plays like an adaptation of the rough outline of the book. The action scenes are present, although some are abbreviated. The key story points are present. But the charm, and character development that made the book at page turner are gone. In fact, this is almost a one man show. Hermione, Ron, Hagrid, Snape, and Neville are almost relegated to being extras.

In my review of Sorcerer's Stone I mentioned that a two hour film couldn't properly present the story contained in the book. It is very apparent this is also true with Chamber of Secrets.

It's like going out to eat Prime Rib and being served a Hamburger. They're both made of the same animal, but the experience is very different.
