Film Review - Galaxy Quest
This is such a great idea, you wonder why someone didn't think of it earlier. Take not Star Trek but the Star Trek phenomenon and show just how nutty it is. If you are a Trekker or know anyone who is, you will really laugh at the parody.
The cast of the 1970's TV show Galaxy Quest are at dead ends in their careers. They can't get hired as actors so they are on the Galaxy Quest convention circuit. They can't stand their lives and they especially can't stand Jason Nesmith, the scene-stealing star of the show.
Right about now some real space aliens "beam them up," having mistaken the TV shows for "historical documents." They've built a spaceship based on the TV show. They have recruited the actors to save their civilization. Now this is where it gets real fun. Since this entire ship has been built for them, it actually behaves, however illogically, the way it was supposed to on the TV show. When a universe is created for you, you can't help but succeed.
This film could only be funnier if the cast Star Trek had done it. The parallels have been very tightly crafted. As I've said, if you know about Trekkers, this is very funny. If you don't it's not quite as funny, but still works. Galaxy Quest is a very well-written and well-performed comedy.
