Film Review - Excess Baggage
EEEWW!!! Oh well, the summer of 1997 had some promising quality movies ...
I may have wanted to see this because of Harry Connick Jr., but the trailer I saw didn't even mention him. Besides, the trailer makes this movie look particularly dumb.
Silverstone plays Emily Hope, a cigarette-smoking, black-eyelinered, spoiled, bratty little rich girl who tries to get her father's attention by faking her own kidnapping. She locks herself in the trunk of her car after calling her father to come "rescue" her after the payoff. Del Toro, as Vincent Roche, is the unlucky sap who steals the car in which she has hidden herself before her father comes to get her.
I know what this movie is about already. Hope and Roche fall in love, the father realizes he ignores his only child, and everyone lives happily ever after, once they all end up in the same place. It could be funny, but I don't think so. This movie is so predictable, I practically quoted the trailer the first time I saw it! And what's with the smoking?! If you're going to play a smoker, at least look like you're inhaling!
All you young males out there will probably want to see this movie just because of Ms. Silverstone. That's fine ... but if you see Batman & Robin instead, you'll see her in a skintight rubber suit with life-like musculature. She'll also get in a cat fight with the villainess ...
Excess Baggage could be funny, but I doubt it. I'm tired of spending $50 (including the small popcorn) at the movies for crap. Alicia, don't get suckered again with the producer credits. Better luck next time? Maybe I'll see you there.
