Every once in a while a film comes along that is different, new, and damned good. That's what Cube is; engaging, unusual, and extremely well shot.

The film is a mystery. Five people wake to find themselves inside a cube. They have no idea how they got there, who brought them, or why. Each wall, and the floor and ceiling has a hatch at its center. Each hatch leads to another cube. Some cubes are lethal.

Quite a lot of credit needs to be given the job of shooting this film. There is really only one set. The internal lighting of the set is changed as the characters move from cube to cube. It would be very easy to get into a rut shooting an entire film on one set. But the changing of the color of the lighting, and very innovative camera set ups keeps this film fresh.

That by itself is not enough to make this a good film. It's the interaction of the characters under stress that makes this film. Five people who don't know each other trying to figure out what's happening, why, and how to get out. Each person is unique. You don't have trouble keeping the characters separate.

The vast majority of film these days say nothing. Cube isn't a pretty movie. But it is interesting, and makes you think. This is very much worth the time.
