Film Review - Cherry 2000

B-Movies are a quite valuable segment of the motion picture diet. In B and independent films, one finds the most diversity of subjects, genres, and themes. When film makers work outside the major studios, sometimes they make gems the studios could not produce. Then you've got this film.

Cherry 2000 is a B-flick. It is a low budget/low-production value film set in the 21st century. Civilization is not gone, but it isn't at all what it used to be. being low budget, no real sets were built. The film was shot entirely on location (mostly outdoors).

The plot is simple, Sam is a hard-working yuppie with a robot girl-friend. One evening while getting frisky in the kitchen, the dish washer over-flows and shorts her out. His quest is to locate a replacement Cherry 2000 torso he can download his girlfriend's personality into.

The rest of the film is kind of a "Road Movie". Sam heads to Nevada to break into zone 7 where the bodies are buried. His guide is Edith 'E.' Johnson (Melanie Griffith) whose idea of camouflage is to have her hair dyed fright wig red. There are lots of shoot outs and chases, and in the end... Naw, I won't spoil it for you.

As shlocky as this is, it's not a bad movie. In fact, it's better than a lot of the crap being released these days. Perhaps it's only sin was not being in an Academy Award competition against Gigli.

Not bad, pick it up next time it's on HBO.
