 Film Review - Analyze This

Finally! The drought is over! 1999 has started just as 1998 ended -- with really sucky movies. At last here's one that I could call people up and shout, "Go see it!"

Analyze This is a tongue-in-cheek comedy about a psychotherapist who unwillingly takes on a mobster patient. Billy Crystal is the shrink. Crystal has the mannerisms down to a T. Like many therapists, Crystal's character could use a shrink himself. He's got inferiority problems, particularly with his father, who he is in competition with. He secretly wishes he could yell "Get a life!" at his patients.

Robert De Niro is largely playing a parody of the many other roles he has played as a mobster. He twists all those other tough guys into a man who is a cold-blooded killer one moment, and a broken man sobbing about his relationship with his dead father the next. You expect Crystal to be funny, but De Niro comes out of left field and blindsides you with his comedic ability. Without his strong performance, the picture would have fallen apart.

Finally! You can go to the movies and have a real honest-to-God laugh. This has been a long time coming. Let's hope the rest of the year in film is as good.

No Suction!
